  2. What Can We Do to Prepare for an Even Warmer Future? With heat warnings becoming more frequent and more severe every summer in the Okanagan, this question will be asked a lot more often. Thankfully our local governments have ideas to protect its residents... For instance, adaptations to infrastructure in cities can be added to reduce high urban air temperatures. For more ideas, go here!

  3. Sustainability Funding: The City of Vernon handed out its first round of sustainability grants. For the full story, go here!

Provincial

  1. B.C.’s Return-It Textile Recycling Program Closed this Summer: The closure of this program will result in old clothing and other textiles piling up in landfills. To avoid this, we recommend this alternative. For more, go here!

  2. Canada and B.C. to Invest in Greener Communities: Over $20 million is promised in infrastructure projects across the province to build more resilient, greener communities. Rural first nations are a few of the communities which will be benefiting from the infrastructure projects. These projects are improving access and providing ways to use alternative transportation to vehicles. For the full article, go here!

  3. Permission to pass on this idea given by our local CAN! group:

Could this be a "Once in a Generation" opportunity?  Dogwood BC, a well-respected climate advocacy organization, is promoting an unusual initiative that we at CAN! believe folks on our listserve need to hear about.

As you probably know, the BC NDP is about to elect a new leader to replace John Horgan. At present, the contest is a two person race: David Eby, attorney general and MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey and Anjali Appadurai, a former federal NDP candidate and well respected climate activist. Dogwood is encouraging current and lapsed NDP members as well as non-members to join the party to support Anjali’s leadership bid.

We at CAN! try to remain non-partisan, so we were unsure what to do with this information. In the interest of supporting climate initiatives that have direct bearing on our membership, we have decided to share this information. Here is a link to Dogwood’s proposal: https://dogwoodbc.ca/news/bcndp-leadership-anjali-appadurai/

Please know that we are not endorsing the provincial NDP. However, we do believe that knowledge is power. As an individual, you can determine the best course of action for yourself in relation to this initiative, but only if you know about it. If you are inclined to follow through on Dogwood BC’s initiative, you have until September 4 to act. For your convenience here is the link you will need: https://secure.bcndp.org/join/

Note: you have to lapse, briefly, membership you might have in another party for your vote to be valid.

In solidarity with our planet,  CAN! (Bill, Mary, Eli, Julie and Barry):
