Climate Action Letter Writing Event - Family Oriented

Organized by Climate Action Now! in support of the City of Vernon’s draft Climate Action Plan

Dear fellow supporters of climate action,

As many of you know, In December of 2020, the City of Vernon completed an excellent draft Climate Action Plan, after 2.5 years of hard work by City staff, the Climate Action Advisory Committee, the CAAC’s 30+ climate ambassadors, and more.

At CAN! we are very much in support of this ambitious and thorough plan. It was developed through the engagement of many Vernon community members and it is OUR plan.

However, we will need to show that there is a lot of community support for this plan if we want our Mayor and Council to not only vote in favour of it this April, but then continue to give it their whole-hearted support and sustained funding.

Given the constraints of Covid-19, we are hosting a letter writing events by Zoom for young families to attend during the daytime over Spring Break We have been told by our local politicians that a personal handwritten letter has more impact than any other form of communication. Also, they really appreciate and remember getting positive letters in support of bold actions like this plan, as they mostly get feedback that is negative.

We propose that you aim to use the letter-writing event to write three letters to three out of our seven politicians (our Mayor and six Councillors). You do not have to write a lot of detailed input: it can suffice to tell our politicians why it is important to you that they pass it. Some hand-drawn art from our younger community members is also worth a thousand words.

When: Saturday, March 20th between 10 :00- 11 :15 AM
This event will be designed to be kid-friendly, with Zoom games to liven up the letter writing.

Duration : 1 hour, 15 minutes (15 minute intro,  45 min writing in breakout groups of 4-5 people (or computers), 15 min wrap-up)
