Handmade Holiday

Sat, Nov 16, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Schubert Centre - 3505 30th Ave
— Recipes, Instructions etc. at bottom of full article —

Our 8th annual event! Short, easy, cost effective demonstrations for making gifts yourself: foods, toys, toiletries, decor, …

We get away from consumerism and put heart back into the holidays!  Schubert Centre’s Thrift Store and cafe is also open. Volunteers: set-up starts at 11:00am for noon opening.

Kids can take home items they've made themselves and grandparents enjoy new ideas they create with grandchildren. Attendees share their ideas for alternatives - gifts from the heart.

SENS is excited to have Runaway Moon Theatre join us for the first time at Handmade Holiday in 2019. Runaway Moon is a community engaged arts group based in Grindrod that initiates art projects across the valley that explore aspects of living here. They will help attendees make and take useful gifts from re-used material, decorated with images from nature that help tell what time of year it is. They will also let you know about their upcoming clothing-making project.

— HOW Handmade Holiday WORKS

Spin & WeaveOur goal is to inspire attendees to make some of their own holiday gifts. Community members volunteer to show attendees how to make gifts but there are no items for sale. It is a community gift making demo rather than a vendor market. We have volunteers set up at their own tables and they each demonstrate how to make a gift. They repeat this as people arrive and circulate over the afternoon.

There is wide variety; many are made from natural elements or repurposed items. Examples are: wreaths from greenery, pomanders from oranges, homemade crackers, little toy owls from shrunken wool sweaters, origami tree ornaments, bath salts, skin creams, hot chocolate mixes, wooden candle holders, fruit cordials, cloth wrapping techniques, wooden toys.
