Say NO to a Gravel Pit in the BX
Once again, BX and Vernon Foothills residents are dealing with the possibility of gravel extraction in the Brentwood Road area of the BX.
Klayton Mertion, of Mertion Excavating Ltd. and owner of two parcels of land at the end of Brentwood Road, has applied for a mining permit to remove 6000 cubic metres (approximately 650 dump truck loads) of gravel and sand to construct an additional driveway on the property. A Soil Removal Permit Application Notice and a Mines Act Notice of Proposed Quarry ran in the Morning Star Friday, October 27 and Sunday, October, 29.
A mandatory public information meeting takes place Monday, November 13 at 1:00pm on site at 5835 Brentwood Road (Klayton Mertion’s property). We understand a representative from the Ministry of Mines will be present.
We’re hoping a good turnout will send a strong message to the property owner, Ministry of Mines, Agricultural Land Commission and Regional District of North Okanagan of the community’s concern with a gravel quarry in a residential neighbourhood.
Whether or not you’re able to attend please consider writing a letter of concern to Ministry of Mines. Your letter will have more influence if you explain your specific concerns with the project (such as the environmental impacts, increased heavy vehicle traffic, dust, proximity to BX Elementary School, etc). Letters will be accepted until November 27, 2017 and should be mailed to:
Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Products

Please note: The notice in the paper incorrectly states the application is available at Regional District of North Okanagan (RNDO) office. RDNO has informed us a copy of the permit application is NOT available at their office.
However, we have scanned a copy of the main part of the application and it can be downloaded from:https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n1wcpaj6y8dvfin/AAAGQ...

Note we are no longer collecting names on petitions as 1200 have signed! The property is not being taken out of the ALR but the owner wants to remove 650 dump truck loads of material.
